Introduction to Huaqiao University

Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture College
Chinese Language and Culture College is specified by Huaqiao University to offer programs oriented towards Overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, including Chinese Language and Culture Education, Chinese International Education, and college-prep education. The College, the former Jimei Overseas Chinese Tutoring School, was founded in 1953, was incorporated into Huaqiao University in 1997. The College is one of the first institutions accredited by Chinese Ministry of Education to enroll overseas students, designated by NOCFL to assist the neighboring countries with Chinese language teaching. It is China's earliest HSK exam place in Fujian. The college enjoys professional faculty and staff who are committed to Chinese culture and language education and are excelling in teaching overseas students.
Dedicated to serving the overseas Chinese and spreading Chinese culture, the college takes on the responsibility of promoting Chinese culture and has formed a multi-level and multi-form system which is particularly known for its Chinese language and culture education programs. The college offers two academic Master's programs in Chinese Language and Chinese Culture Education, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and one professional Master's program in Chinese International Education; three Bachelor degree programs in Chinese International Education, Chinese Language and Culture Education, and Chinese Language; and a junior college program in Chinese Language. One-semester or one-academic-year non-degree Chinese classes are available anytime. The College is also committed to overseas postgraduate education, undergraduate self-study education, teacher qualification education and short-term teacher training, which have achieved great popularity in many countries. Cooperating with the Chinese language and culture institutions in foreign countries, we offer teacher training programs, students projects of Chinese Language Summer/Winter Camp, Chinese Cultural Root-seeking Trips, etc.
Situated in the Jimei School Village, Xiamen and endowed with an awesome view of both mountains and sea, our campus has long been famous for its beautiful scenery and has an easy access to public transport. The school offers complete facilities for teaching and accommodation, comprising well-equipped modern classrooms, classrooms for experiencing Chinese culture, language labs, multimedia classrooms, Internet classrooms, an electronic libraries, comfortable dormitories, canteens, a supermarket and playgrounds.
Majors for Overseas Students
1. Chinese Language Degree Program
This program recruits overseas Chinese and foreign candidates with senior high school diploma or above, with valid passports, aged over eighteen.
We offer a four-year undergraduate program and a two-year junior college program in Chinese Language, both of which are intended for foreigner students. The four-year undergraduate program in Chinese Language includes three different tracks: Chinese Culture, Business Chinese and Tourism Chinese. Teaching is focused on training students’ comprehensive skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation to enable them to master Chinese language and Chinese culture. It aims at producing high-quality talent with excellent Chinese language proficiency, cross-culture communicative competence, systematic knowledge of Chinese language, good understanding of China’s national condition and social culture. Students will be familiar with the international communication of Chinese culture or international modern business or tourism management knowledge, and be able to use Chinese for cultural exchanges, economic and trade negotiations, and tourism services.

Notes:
① Students with a proper Chinese proficiency are allowed to join a class of corresponding level at any time of a program.
②Courses such as Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Arts, Chinese Music and Chinese Folk Dancing are available to students.
③According to the length of study and completion of credits, students will be granted such certificates as bachelor degree certificates, junior college certificates, completion certificates and certificate of study.
2. Non-degree Chinese Language Program
This program recruits overseas Chinese and foreign candidates with senior high school diploma or above, with valid passports, aged over eighteen.
I. Intensive Class
Course Arrangement:
The main courses of the one-academic-year Chinese language intensive class include Comprehensive Chinese, Chinese Listening, Chinese Character Writing, Spoken Chinese, Science/Technology Chinese, etc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and other courses are also available. The first twenty-week semester features intensive language study with 34 class hours per week. In the second twenty-week semester with 36 class hours per week, besides language courses, students can also choose Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and other courses.
Teaching Mode:
The intensive class adopts comprehensive training method to create a teaching model that combines meticulous teaching, enough practice, personalized guidance and small-class teaching (15 students/class). Each class is assigned with a round-the-clock head teacher. Intensive courses and big input are adopted to create an immersive Chinese learning and using environment for students. Emphasis is laid on students' attendance rate to develop their habits of previewing before class, reviewing and doing homework on time after class. Tests are conducted every month.
Course Advantages:
Through short-term, efficient and intensive study, international Chinese language beginners can pass HSK Level 4 or Level 5 within 10 months. With the Chinese, mathematics, physics and chemistry levels students obtain through the intensive courses, they can pass the MOE's final exams for preparatory college students of Chinese Government Scholarship. Their Chinese competence, related professional knowledge and cross-cultural communication skills will qualify them to be admitted by Chinese institutes of higher education. The good learning habits will make them well-prepared for further study in Chinese Universities.
Incentives:
Students who successfully complete the program will be admitted to the undergraduate programs of HQU. Those with good academic performance can apply for the overseas students scholarship.
II. Normal Class
We offer overseas students with one-semester or one-academic-year Chinese language normal classes which include elementary class, intermediate class and advanced class. The advanced class includes Business Chinese and Tourism Chinese. Students are divided into classes of different levels after proficiency tests. They will learn both basic language skills and basic knowledge of the related majors. Non-degree Chinese language classes offer diversified choices to meet personalized demands.
Elementary Class (Semester I, Semester II): The main courses include Junior Chinese, Junior Oral Chinese, Junior Listening, Junior Reading, Literacy of Chinese Characters, Chinese Calligraphy, etc. These courses will enable students to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese pronunciation, basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, which will satisfy their needs of daily life, study and social communication.
Intermediate Class (Semester I, Semester II): The main courses include Intermediate Chinese, Intermediate Oral Chinese, Intermediate Listening, Intermediate Reading, Basic Writing, News Stories Reading, etc. These courses will equip students with fairly good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to pursue their academic study in Chinese universities.
Advanced Class (Semester I, Semester II): The main courses include Advanced Chinese, Business Chinese, Oral Business Chinese, Oral Tourism Chinese, Practical Business Writing, etc. These courses will enable students to listen to Chinese radio and TV programs, read Chinese newspapers and magazines, and to have the language ability needed to pursue Bachelor Degree study or above in Chinese universities. They will help students to use Chinese fluently in social communication and to be qualified for tourist jobs and foreign trade.
Course Duration: The length of all the above classes is all one year with two semesters. Students can choose to study for half a year, one year or even longer. Based on their proficiency tests, students can also choose to begin from any level. Students who successfully complete all the required courses will be granted a certificate of study or certificate of completion.
3. Short-term Training
The Training Department is responsible for the specific work of training overseas students and teachers. It provides all-round services including study, accommodation and meals to those who sign up for the training programs, and organizes trips to the main resorts of Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Wuyi Mount, etc. The charge for short-term training class is RMB 350 per person per day.

II. Winter/Summer Camp

Curriculum: According to the students' Chinese proficiency, language, culture and talent courses of different levels are offered.
Target Applicants: overseas teenagers of Chinese origin, students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as foreign students.
Training Objectives: It aims at teaching Chinese language and culture knowledge and improving students’ Chinese communicative competence and their understanding of Chinese society.
School Calendar and Application Procedures
1. School Calendar: An academic year includes two semesters. The first semester begins in early September and the second in mid or late February. Enrollment is welcome at any other time.
2. How to Apply:
1) Please log on the application website (https://admissions.hqu.edu.cn/) to apply or fill out the Application Form ( attached below) and email it to the Admissions Office (zsb@hwmail.hqu.edu.cn) together with a photocopy of valid passport, English version of high school graduation certificate, transcripts, Statement of Financial Support, and Physical Examination Record for Foreigners.
2) The Admissions Office will send the JW202 Form and Admission Notice to students within two months after receiving the application. Students should apply for study visa (X1, X2) at the local Chinese Embassy with the JW202 Form and Admission Notice.
3) Within one week after entry into China, students should call at the Students Affairs Office to settle their residence registration, insurance, physical examination and residence permit. The expenses have to be paid by students themselves.

1. Freshmen of Chinese Language are entitled to Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, and Tan Kah Kee Scholarship. The College also sets up scholarship for distinguished students. The first class prize is RMB 8,000; the second RMB 6,000, the third prize RMB 4,000. The scholarship is awarded once a year. Students with excellent academic performance can receive scholarships and certificates. Besides, the College provides financial aid to students in need with three levels of subsidy: RMB 6,000, RMB 5,000, and RMB 4,000.
